CFG & the Family nicely blend past and present elements, influences

By Ron Wynn

"The classic dilemma contemporary bands face, especially those operating in the blues-rock universe, is meeting and satisfying multiple, sometimes conflicting, audience demands. Rock fans predominantly want energy, volume, and flamboyance, while blues devotees are more drawn to storytelling and instrumental and vocal acumen, often frowning on what they consider excessive dependence on spectacle.

The Hamilton, Ohio–based band CFG & the Family have spent four years perfecting their blend of authoritative blues presentation and dynamic rock enhancement. The quartet is headlined by lead vocalist and ace harmonica soloist Casey Gomez. He has been immersed in music for over three decades, inheriting his talents from his stepfather, a member of a regional blues band in the ’70s and ’80s. Gomez developed his sound and style while playing bass in various local and regional bands. His expansion into singing and songwriting helped him overcome the tragic loss of his wife. In the process, he discovered both an outlet for creative expression and a way to confront grief without being completely overcome by it.

He played in two other bands before assembling his current crew, whose individual excellence has forged CFG & the Family into a cohesive, exciting unit. Dynamic guitarist Mason Johnson supplies blistering licks, solos, and accompaniment. He is a formidable soloist in his own right, and the interaction between Gomez’s harmonica and Johnson’s guitar continually fuels the band’s fiery sound. Bassist Greg Skinner and drummer Pete Davidson comprise a super-tight rhythm section that anchors everything with precision and power. Momentum has continued to build for CFG & the Family. They reached the final four among 300 bands from around the world at the 2024 International Blues Challenge. They followed that achievement by winning Best Local Original Band in the Cincinnati Readers Poll and being named Butler County's Best Local Band.

When asked about influences, Gomez acknowledges that he and the band members love far too many artists to cite them all. Still, he mentions expected inspirations such as Albert and Freddie King, Robert Johnson, the Allman Brothers, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band, alongside some surprises like Humble Pie and Jimi Hendrix.

Listening to songs from their 2023 self-titled release, CFG & the Family, it is clear how skillfully their music integrates vintage and contemporary elements. “Hellhounds” evokes the swooping, ethereal feel of classic Delta blues, while the nearly nine-minute “Couple Skate” pivots on a mighty blend of furious harmonica and equally dashing guitar solos, perfectly anchored within an ideal framework. “My Sweet Love” is a heartfelt romantic tribute, while “Days Go By” and “Show Me How” spotlight the group’s ability to ride a groove while enhancing a compelling storyline.

As strong as those songs were and remain, the nine selections on the band’s upcoming LP reflect a group that has matured and grown more authoritative in every aspect. Gomez’s singing and harmonica work have gained added drive and passion, matched by Johnson’s confident and expressive guitar contributions. There have never been any shortcomings in the rhythm section, as the Skinner/Davidson combination adeptly delivers whatever the moment demands, whether powerhouse propulsion or subtle, supportive backing that allows Gomez and Johnson to explore freely.

While fans will undoubtedly develop their own favorites, several standout tracks deserve mention. The anthemic “Living Free” ranks as the band’s definitive social statement, with Gomez’s emphatic vocals underscoring themes of freedom and wisdom in an era where lunacy often runs rampant. “Sacred Fields” is equally powerful lyrically, though its tone, sensibility, and direction differ, making it no less memorable. “Judgment Day” is a compelling musical statement, even as it explores darker themes of villainy. “The Line” serves as a searing confessional, while “Chi Town Shuffle” showcases Gomez and Johnson’s instrumental flair, driven by excellent rhythm section support.

It is not excessive hype to tout CFG & the Family as one of the next bands poised to break through in 2026 and beyond. They exemplify the best of both worlds, delivering a brand of blues-rock that resonates with old and young alike, traditionalists and modernists. Look for (album title) to arrive with explosive energy upon release, and for blues-rock fans to embrace it wholeheartedly."
